Preventive fillings are also known as fissure sealants and are used mostly on the permanent molars of children to protect the teeth by blocking the pits and fissures acting as barrier for bacteria that could lay on the tooth surface and damage the enamel. Permanent molars have rough surfaces that are difficult to clean, which enhance food trapping. Numerous bacteria in the oral cavity can act on the tooth surface by using the trapped food as substrate.
